When to Be Concerned
Daytime Activity: A raccoon active during the day or acting unafraid of humans may be sick.
Erratic Behavior: Look for staggering, disorientation, discharge from eyes/mouth, or unusual noises.
Property Damage: They cause damage seeking food and shelter in attics, under porches, and by raiding trash.

Why Raccoons Are Dangerous
Physical Threat:
They can inflict serious bites and scratches with their nimble paws and teeth, requiring medical attention and stitches.
Disease Carriers:
Raccoons are a major carrier of rabies, and they also spread parasites like raccoon roundworm (from their droppings) and distemper.
Aggression:
They become aggressive when threatened, cornered, protecting young, or if infected with rabies, showing symptoms like foaming at the mouth or disorientation.
Threat to Pets:
Raccoons can injure or kill smaller pets like cats and dogs if a confrontation occurs.

Possums damage homes by tearing up insulation for nests, chewing wires (creating fire hazards), damaging siding/roofing to get in, and leaving behind foul-smelling urine and feces, which can ruin drywall and ductwork. They also create messes in attics, crawlspaces, and yards by rooting through trash, digging for grubs, and leaving droppings, posing health risks from diseases and parasites like fleas/ticks.
-
Squirrels cause significant damage by chewing wood (wires, beams, siding), tearing insulation for nests, contaminating attics with droppings, and creating entry points through roofs, soffits, vents, and chimneys, leading to water leaks, mold, and fire hazards (electrical shorts). They gnaw relentlessly to keep their incisors short, damaging everything from wiring (a major fire risk) to PVC pipes, while their nests and waste ruin insulation and stain walls, requiring extensive repairs and professional cleanup.
