  • A cockroach is a common, resilient insect from the order Blattodea, known for its flat, oval body, long antennae, and six legs, thriving in warm, dark, moist places and feeding on almost anything. While thousands of species exist globally, only a few are common pests, often identified by their brownish-red to black color and ability to reproduce rapidly, spreading germs and triggering allergies.  

  • Ohio has several common cockroach types, mainly German, American, and Oriental cockroaches, all seeking food, water, and shelter, especially in warm/damp spots like kitchens, sewers, and basements. They carry diseases (Salmonella, E.coli) and trigger allergies, so control involves cleanliness (no crumbs, spills), reducing moisture, sealing cracks, and using baits/insecticides for elimination, with German roaches being the most frequent invaders

    • Eliminate Food Sources: Wipe counters, clean under appliances, wash dishes immediately, store food (including pet food) in sealed containers, and take trash out regularly.

    • Remove Water: Fix leaky pipes/faucets, dry sinks, and keep shower/tub areas dry.

    • Seal Entry Points: Caulk cracks, gaps around pipes, and use weather stripping on doors/windows to block access from outside or other units.

    • Reduce Clutter: Roaches hide in dark, cluttered spaces; keep floors clear. 

  • Kitchen & Bathrooms 

    • Empty Cabinets:

      Remove everything from cupboards, under sinks, and drawers; place items on tables covered with sheets or towels. 

    • Deep Clean:

      Wipe down all surfaces (counters, inside cabinets, under the fridge/stove) with detergent, and vacuum/mop floors thoroughly. 

    • Move Appliances:

      Pull refrigerators, stoves, and dishwashers away from walls to clean behind and underneath. 

    • Seal Trash:

      Use sealed, leak-proof trash cans and empty them often. 

    General Home Prep

    • Declutter:

      Remove items from floors, including toys, clothes, and papers, to give technicians clear access. 

    • Vacuum:

      Thoroughly vacuum carpets, baseboards, and furniture, disposing of the vacuum bag outside immediately. 

    • Seal & Store:

      Place all food, pet food, dishes, and baby items in sealed containers or covered areas. 

    • Check for Leaks:

      Fix any water leaks, as roaches need water to survive. 

    Pets & Aquariums

    • Remove Pets:

      Take all pets (dogs, cats, birds) off-site if possible, or confine them in a secure room. 

    • Protect Fish:

      Cover aquariums with sheets, turn off the air pumps (disconnect them), and unplug filters. 

    During Treatment

    • Be Ready to Leave: Plan to be out of the house for a minimum of 3 hours.
